Is your gut being poisoned by Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is no longer a conversation that belongs only in agricultural fields or research laboratories. Decades of widespread use have placed this synthetic herbicide within a much larger environmental-health conversation involving food, soil, waterways, precipitation, agricultural practices, and human exposure.


At IndigoKoi Wellness, LLC, we regard glyphosate as a pervasive environmental-health concern. That concern deserves a place in the everyday food conversation because nourishment is not determined only by calories, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. How food is grown, what it is exposed to before reaching our plates, and how often we consume it are also worthy of consideration.


This is not an invitation to become afraid of food. It is an invitation to become more informed about it.


When a synthetic agricultural chemical becomes widespread enough to move through our environment, appear in foods, and be detected through human biomonitoring, due caution is reasonable. We do not have to wait for every scientific argument to be settled before asking whether exposure can reasonably be reduced.


Glyphosate and the Cancer Concern


In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans, Group 2A.


IARC reported limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans, sufficient evidence in experimental animals, and mechanistic evidence involving genotoxicity and oxidative stress. California subsequently listed glyphosate under Proposition 65 as a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer.


Those determinations are part of a larger and often contentious scientific history surrounding one of the world's most widely used herbicides. They do not mean every exposure will result in cancer, but they do mean the discussion deserves far more than a casual dismissal.


Glyphosate Is Not Simply Sitting on the Outside of Food


Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide. Once absorbed by a plant, it can move through plant tissues. That is part of what makes it effective agriculturally, but it also changes how consumers need to think about residue.


Washing produce remains an important food-safety practice, but washing cannot be relied upon to remove glyphosate that has already moved into plant tissue. Cooking cannot automatically be relied upon to eliminate it either.


Research following glyphosate residues through wheat milling and bread production found that baking did not meaningfully eliminate glyphosate remaining in the flour. Different foods and processing methods behave differently, so it would be too broad to claim that no food-processing technique ever reduces glyphosate residues.


The practical point remains important: rinsing and cooking should not be assumed to make glyphosate exposure disappear. When residues remain within an edible portion of a crop, consumption becomes one potential route of human exposure.


Food Choice Is Also an Exposure Choice

Before choosing a frequently eaten food, it can be helpful to ask how it was grown, whether systemic herbicides were likely to have been used, whether an organic or lower-exposure version is reasonably available, whether the food is eaten often enough that changing the source could reduce repeated exposure, and whether that change can be made without creating unnecessary financial strain or food anxiety.


Not every meal needs to become an investigation. But foods eaten every day or several times each week deserve particular attention because frequency matters when we are thinking about cumulative exposure.


Choosing a different source for one staple food eaten repeatedly may be more practical than attempting to replace an entire kitchen overnight. This is where thoughtful wellness becomes sustainable.


Glyphosate Has Been Found Beyond the Farm


Agricultural chemicals do not necessarily remain exactly where they were applied. Environmental monitoring has documented glyphosate and its primary degradation product, AMPA, in soil, surface water, waterways, air, and precipitation.


Studies conducted in agricultural regions have detected glyphosate in rain samples, demonstrating that environmental movement can extend beyond the original application site. That does not mean every rainfall event everywhere contains the same concentration or presents the same level of risk. It does mean agricultural chemicals can become broader environmental exposures.


Human health does not exist separately from the environment in which our food is grown, our water moves, and our bodies live. That connection deserves greater attention in holistic wellness.

Your Gut Changes the Conversation


One argument commonly raised around glyphosate is that its primary target—the shikimate pathway—does not exist in human cells. That statement is true, but human beings are not composed only of human cells.


Our gastrointestinal tract contains a vast microbial ecosystem, and many microorganisms use biological pathways that human cells do not. Glyphosate inhibits an enzyme known as EPSPS, part of the shikimate pathway found in plants and many microorganisms.


That creates an important question: what happens when a chemical designed to disrupt a biological pathway in plants repeatedly encounters microorganisms within the human gut that may use that same pathway?


Researchers continue to investigate that question, and it is not a trivial one. The gut microbiome participates in digestion, metabolism, nutrient production, immune communication, intestinal-barrier integrity, and signaling throughout the body. When discussing human health, our microorganisms belong in the conversation.


What Researchers Are Finding in the Gut


Experimental research has reported glyphosate-associated changes involving microbial composition, metabolism, intestinal permeability, mucus production, intestinal structure, immune activity, oxidative stress, and other metabolic processes.


A 2024 systematic review of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides reported intestinal dysbiosis and structural and metabolic changes across the experimental literature it examined. Other studies have reported microbiome alterations and changes involving intestinal homeostasis following exposure.


Much of the direct mechanistic work remains based on laboratory and animal models, and that distinction should be stated clearly. Animal, laboratory, mechanistic, environmental, and human studies answer different questions. None should be expected to prove what it was never designed to prove.


Within holistic and integrative health communities, the evidence surrounding glyphosate is often regarded as substantial enough to move beyond casual concern. Many practitioners view the documented environmental presence of glyphosate, its systemic use in agriculture, its detection in human biomonitoring, its effects in experimental models, and the continuing questions surrounding carcinogenicity and microbiome disruption as compelling evidence that meaningful exposure is occurring and deserves precaution.

How We Read the Research Matters


Scientific research is not one single voice. Study design, duration, dose, population, formulation, statistical approach, conflicts of interest, funding, endpoints, and researcher assumptions can all influence the conclusions that emerge.


Glyphosate has also been the subject of significant scrutiny regarding corporate involvement in scientific communication and portions of the published literature. That history deserves transparency.


It does not mean every industry-funded paper should automatically be rejected. Nor should research supporting environmental-health concerns escape scrutiny simply because its conclusions align with our own.


A strong holistic practice should be willing to examine all evidence critically. Science is most valuable when it remains open to questioning, replication, disagreement, refinement, and better evidence.


Due Caution Is a Reasonable Health Practice


We do not have to choose between panic and indifference. There is another option: due caution.


When a synthetic agricultural chemical becomes widespread throughout food and environmental systems, when biologically plausible mechanisms of concern exist, when experimental findings show effects worthy of investigation, and when significant long-term questions remain unresolved, reducing unnecessary exposure is reasonable.


Caution does not mean declaring that every exposure causes disease. It means recognizing that incomplete evidence of harm is not the same thing as proof of harmlessness. For IndigoKoi Wellness, LLC, that distinction is important.


Human Exposure Is Not Merely Theoretical


Glyphosate and AMPA have been measured in human biomonitoring studies, particularly in urine. Detection does not tell us, by itself, whether a particular person has experienced injury, but it does establish something important: human exposure occurs.


The conversation therefore moves beyond whether people are exposed at all. The more meaningful questions involve frequency, cumulative exposure, dose, formulation, timing, susceptibility, metabolism, and long-term biological effect. Those questions deserve serious investigation.

We cannot eliminate every environmental exposure. That does not mean we stop reducing the ones we can influence.

IARC classifies glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans, while California lists it as known to the state to cause cancer.

When a claim sounds reassuring—or frightening—look beneath the headline.


Due caution is not fear. It is thoughtful stewardship of the body you live in.
